The Cubs looked poised for an easy win over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, holding a comfortable six-run lead heading into the eighth inning. But everything changed quickly when the Diamondbacks exploded for 10 runs in the top of the eighth, suddenly grabbing a four-run advantage. However, their momentum didn’t last long—Chicago answered with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Closer Ryan Pressly then shut things down in the ninth to secure a dramatic 13-11 win for the Cubs.
The combined 16 runs scored in that single inning made history at Wrigley Field. According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, it was the most combined runs ever scored in one inning at the historic ballpark, which opened in 1914—second in age only to Boston’s Fenway Park.
After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell, now in his second season, reflected on the chaos. “It was crazy,” he said in his postgame remarks (via Marquee Sports Network). “We gave up 10 runs in an inning and still won. It was a wild game, but we kept fighting. There are 27 outs in a game, and this proves it.”
The two teams will square off again on Saturday in the second game of the three-game set, with Chicago sending Ben Brown to the mound against Arizona’s Zac Gallen.
