At 36 years old, Novak Djokovic stands as one of the most iconic tennis players of his era, having claimed an impressive 23 singles Grand Slam titles. Known for his remarkable achievements, Djokovic recently disclosed the key to his exceptional performance: a meticulously curated, health-conscious daily diet.

In an episode of the podcast “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” Djokovic provided insights into his dietary regimen, a crucial aspect of his life that contributes to his on-court success. Earlier in his career, Djokovic’s diet consisted of a mix of beans, vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, white meat, chickpeas, seeds, lentils, and healthy oils, with an occasional indulgence in a small piece of candy as a cheat meal.

However, Djokovic’s diet underwent a significant transformation after facing severe breathing issues that led to nose surgery. Post-2016, the Serbian tennis star embraced a plant-based diet, eliminating gluten-based foods, dairy, and refined sugar from his meals. This shift not only addressed his health concerns but also reflected his awareness of the environmental impact of animal slaughter, prompting him to make mindful food choices.

Djokovic’s day typically begins with a glass of warm water and lemon to aid in detoxification. Subsequently, he consumes celery juice on an empty stomach, followed by a green smoothie made from various algae, fruits, and superfoods. Additionally, Djokovic incorporates supplements to enhance mental clarity and sustain his well-being throughout the day. His morning diet emphasizes fruits, salads, and pseudo-grains like quinoa, millet, wild rice, sweet potatoes, and normal potatoes, prepared through steaming or boiling.

The tennis legend’s first meal of the day is a “power bowl” comprising a blend of seeds, gluten-free muesli, fruits, berries, mixed nuts, almond or rice milk, and a touch of manuka honey for its antibacterial properties and fructose content. This nutrient-packed meal sets the tone for his demanding training sessions.

When it comes to lunch, Djokovic opts for a complex-carbohydrate-rich menu, providing the necessary energy for his intensive training sessions. Gluten-free pasta, grilled vegetables, olive oil, salt, and a mixed salad form the core of his midday meal. On occasions when he has an afternoon match, Djokovic may include meat or fish to meet the energy demands of his athletic endeavors.

Recognizing the importance of fitness alongside a balanced diet, Djokovic underscores the role of exercise in his overall well-being. As he continues to dominate the tennis world, Djokovic’s dietary choices stand as a testament to his commitment to health, performance, and environmental consciousness, showcasing the holistic approach that has propelled him to the pinnacle of his sport.
