‘$150m Deal?’- Insider Gives Major Matt Shaw Update if Chicago Cubs Sign Alex Bregman

Posted on May 15, 2025

Spring Training is just days away for the Chicago Cubs, bringing excitement for players and fans alike. After a disappointing 2024 season, the Cubs are looking to bounce back in 2025, and their talent gives them reason for optimism. One of the key position battles this spring will be at third base, where young prospect Matt Shaw is currently the frontrunner.

According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, Shaw is expected to claim the starting job—unless the Cubs make a move for Alex Bregman. “He’s the favorite to be the Opening Day third baseman if the Cubs don’t sign Bregman,” Mooney noted.

If Chicago decides to pursue Bregman, it could impact Shaw’s path to the majors, something the team may want to avoid. Committing over $150 million to an aging third baseman wouldn’t make much sense if they believe Shaw is ready to contribute at the big-league level. However, if the Cubs see Bregman as a key piece in their pursuit of a World Series title, they might be willing to make the investment.

Shaw has excelled in the minors, posting a .303/.384/.522 slash line over 600 career at-bats. At this stage of his development, keeping him in the minors wouldn’t benefit anyone.
