T49ers Leadership Reflects on Day 3 Draft

Strategy: Lynch and Shanahan Share Insights
Santa Clara, CA – The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up the 2025 NFL Draft with a focused and calculated Day 3 strategy that emphasized depth, versatility, and long-term development. General Manager John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan offered a behind-the-scenes look at how the final day of selections unfolded, presented by NetApp.

“Day 3 is where you build the heart of your roster,” Lynch stated in a post-draft media session. “You look for guys who may not be the biggest names but who bring toughness, work ethic, and traits we can mold into our system.”
The 49ers entered the day with a handful of mid-to-late round picks and clear objectives: bolster special teams, add interior line depth, and find developmental players who fit the team’s physical and mental mold. One of the more intriguing selections was a hybrid linebacker-safety prospect, praised for his speed and football IQ—traits that align with defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen’s evolving schemes.
Coach Shanahan emphasized the importance of culture and adaptability when selecting players in the later rounds. “We want guys who love the game and can take coaching. At this stage, you’re not just looking at game tape—you’re calling coaches, diving into character. We want players who will compete, push our vets, and grow into bigger roles.”
Lynch also highlighted the synergy between the front office and coaching staff. “We’ve built a process that’s collaborative. When Kyle and I are aligned on a guy—especially on Day 3—you know we’re bringing in someone we truly believe in.”
The duo praised the scouting department for identifying high-upside talent throughout the college season and noted that several undrafted free agents are already on the radar, continuing the team’s commitment to unearthing gems beyond the draft.
As the rookies prepare for minicamp, the 49ers remain optimistic that the Day 3 picks will add depth to a roster already built for contention.
