While the Pittsburgh Steelers patiently anticipate information regarding Aaron Rodgers’ future actions, the 41-year-old has made an effort to acquire practical experience with what could be the team’s leading offensive asset.
On NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” insider Mike Garafolo disclosed that he took part in a throwing session with new Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, who came to the team this month after a trade from the Seattle Seahawks and later signed a five-year, $132 million contract extension.
“The most recent action during the weekend occurred at UCLA, where [Rodgers] passed to DK Metcalf,” Garafolo stated. “According to sources familiar with that workout, the two of them participated in a throwing session together.”
Rodgers is completing the process and fulfilling all the requirements, and I believe it was a productive throwing session with him and Metcalf, so we will see if that results in him expressing, ‘You know what, yes, I’m completely on board.’ “I appreciate that guy, and I have my eye on that target over there.”
Athletes from across the league interact and practice together during the offseason, making it generally difficult to assert that a scenario like this carries any extra significance.
In this instance, though, it’s reasonable to believe that Rodgers and Metcalf collaborating for a workout was not by chance. The two were probably acquainted with one another to some extent prior, but this was likely arranged as a way to foster chemistry in case the four-time MVP eventually chooses to join the Steelers.
At present, there is no definitive schedule for when Rodgers will reveal his intentions, but Pittsburgh appears willing to remain patient for the time being.
Maybe it’ll become a bit restless should he still be on the open market at this time next month, but the organization understands that he gives them its best chance of contending in 2025 and thus are willing to make concessions.
