Angel Reese Demands Fair Recognition After Caitlin Clark Wins Athlete of the Year

Posted on April 13, 2025

Chicago Sky star Angel Reese has ignited a storm of conversation after voicing her frustration over being completely left out of the Time Athlete of the Year vote. Taking to social media, Reese didn’t hold back, questioning the fairness of the selection process and accusing the decision-makers of possible bias. Her post, which read, “Zero vote for Angel Reese? Are you kidding me? Someone paid the judges for sure,” quickly gained traction, sparking heated debates across sports media and among fans online.

Reese’s reaction goes beyond personal disappointment—it sheds light on the broader issue of recognition and respect in women’s sports. The athlete’s strong performance, including leading her college team to a national championship and being named the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Final Four, has made her a prominent figure in women’s basketball. Yet, her exclusion from the Athlete of the Year voting leaves many wondering if systemic biases are still undermining the achievements of Black female athletes.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark, who currently plays for the Indiana Fever, was awarded Time’s Athlete of the Year on December 11. The recognition comes as Clark continues to make waves in the WNBA with impressive rookie season stats—averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. Her dynamic playing style and media presence have been widely credited with drawing unprecedented attention to the WNBA, positioning her as a breakout star in women’s sports. NBA champion Matt Barnes defended Clark, acknowledging her influence and urging critics to support her impact rather than minimize it.

Still, the conversation isn’t about diminishing Clark’s achievements but rather addressing the growing call for equal spotlight across the board. Reese’s appeal for re-ranking highlights the persistent disparities in how female athletes are recognized, and her outcry resonates with many who feel that the accomplishments of women of color are often overlooked. In one of her follow-up posts, Reese emphasized the importance of fairness, stating that it’s not just about one award—it’s about honoring all deserving athletes who push boundaries and elevate the sport.

Looking ahead, fans won’t have to wait long to see these two fierce competitors meet on the court. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will face off against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky on May 17 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. With tensions running high and both athletes commanding attention, the upcoming game is already one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.
