BAD: Cubs Make a Meaningless Move, Trading Gage Workman to White Sox and Bringing in an Inexperienced Player

Posted on May 13, 2025

The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox finalized a trade, as confirmed by the White Sox’s announcement. The move saw Gage Workman, a versatile 25-year-old infielder, head to the White Sox in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, the White Sox designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment.

This trade comes at a challenging point in the season for the White Sox, who have struggled throughout 2025. Meanwhile, the Cubs are enjoying a strong run. The addition of Workman gives the White Sox another option in their infield, as they look to make improvements during the season.

Workman, who has only appeared in nine MLB games, brings a .214/.267/.286 batting line with a .552 OPS across 15 plate appearances. Despite the limited experience at the major league level, Workman is known for his ability to play multiple infield positions, offering the White Sox valuable depth.

The White Sox are hopeful that Workman can find success in their lineup and contribute in the areas where they’ve been lacking this season. With the trade, the team looks to improve their infield options and bring in a fresh face to support their ongoing efforts.

As for the Cubs, they part with Workman, who they acquired as a versatile backup. Given their strong performance this season, they are likely focused on maintaining momentum and adding resources where needed.
