Boston Bruins Star David Pastrnak Invests $4.5 Million to Transform House into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Massachusetts

Posted on May 16, 2025

Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak, known for his electrifying play on the ice, is making headlines off the rink with a $4.5 million investment to transform a historic Massachusetts property into a shelter for homeless youth. The 28-year-old right winger, who has solidified his role as a leader for the Bruins, announced the initiative on Thursday, partnering with local nonprofits to address the growing crisis of youth homelessness in the state.

The project, dubbed “Pasta’s Place,” will convert a 19th-century mansion in Dorchester into a modern, 40-bed facility designed to provide safe housing, mental health services, job training, and educational support for young people aged 16 to 24. Pastrnak, a native of Havirov, Czech Republic, cited his own journey as an immigrant and professional athlete as inspiration for the venture.

“I came to this country with a dream and a lot of help along the way,” Pastrnak said at a press conference outside the property. “I want to give back to kids who are struggling, to give them a place to feel safe and build their own dreams.”

Massachusetts faces a significant homelessness challenge, with over 3,000 unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness annually, according to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.

The state’s high cost of living and limited affordable housing exacerbate the issue, particularly for young people aging out of foster care or fleeing unstable home environments. Pastrnak’s initiative aims to fill a critical gap in services, offering not just shelter but a pathway to stability.

The mansion, a 12,000-square-foot Victorian structure, was purchased for $3.2 million, with the remaining $1.3 million allocated for renovations and operational costs for the first two years. The building, which has been vacant for nearly a decade, will undergo extensive upgrades, including energy-efficient systems, accessible living spaces, and communal areas for recreation and learning. Local architect Maria Delgado, who is leading the redesign, emphasized the goal of creating a “home-like environment” that fosters dignity and hope. “This isn’t just a shelter; it’s a community hub,” Delgado said.

Pastrnak is collaborating with YouthBuild Boston and The Home for Little Wanderers, two organizations with deep roots in supporting at-risk youth. YouthBuild will oversee job training programs, offering residents skills in construction, technology, and hospitality, while

The Home for Little Wanderers will provide on-site counseling and case management. “David’s commitment is transformative,” said Jonathan Pinto, executive director of YouthBuild Boston. “His investment will directly impact dozens of lives each year and inspire others to get involved.”

The announcement comes at a time when Pastrnak’s leadership, both on and off the ice, is under the spotlight. The Bruins, who missed the playoffs in the 2024-25 season for the first time in nine years, have leaned heavily on Pastrnak’s offensive prowess and emerging captaincy.

He recorded 43 goals and 106 points this season, earning praise as one of the NHL’s top performers despite the team’s struggles. Teammate Jeremy Swayman called Pastrnak’s philanthropy “a natural extension of who he is.” “He’s our leader, and he’s showing what it means to step up for the community,” Swayman said.

Pastrnak’s involvement extends beyond funding. He plans to visit the shelter regularly, host fundraising events, and leverage his platform to raise awareness about youth homelessness. A charity hockey game featuring Bruins players and other NHL stars is already in the works for next summer, with proceeds benefiting Pasta’s Place. “This is just the start,” Pastrnak said. “I want to keep pushing to make a difference.”

Community leaders and residents have welcomed the initiative, though some expressed concerns about zoning and neighborhood impact. Dorchester City Councilor Jane Rivera assured residents that the project complies with local regulations and includes community input sessions to address concerns. “This is a win for Dorchester and for the entire state,” Rivera said.

Pasta’s Place is slated to open in fall 2026, with the first residents expected to move in by December. For now, Pastrnak’s vision is a beacon of hope, proving that his impact reaches far beyond the TD Garden. As he put it, “Hockey’s my job, but helping others is my heart.”
