Brandel Chamblee and Paige Mackenzie baffled by Matt Kuchar’s actions

Posted on August 13, 2024

Golf analysts Brandel Chamblee and Paige Mackenzie were baffled by Matt Kuchar’s decision to play the final hole of the fourth round of the 2024 Wyndham Championship on Monday, August 12. The PGA Tour event was delayed by weather but was on track to finish safely on Sunday. However, play was suspended due to darkness, leaving only three players remaining to complete the game.

By that time, Kuchar, Max Glaserman and Chad Ramey were playing the final hole but had to finish their rounds. Rami and Grazizaman decided to continue the game, but decided to end on Monday after the 18th place.

Kuchar is accelerating the shots destroyed on the 18th, and probably not doubted that groups, including Aaron Paradise, are always playing. Fortunately, his ball was well sailed to the left of the 18th Fairway. Nevertheless, he decided to continue his game the next day. Explaining his reasoning for not playing the 18th hole on Sunday, Kuchar said (via NBC Sports):

“I was trying to set an example for Max,” Kuchar told Lewis. “We were pretty far from the point where we should have stopped playing. We saw what Max did with hole 16. They had to blast the hole. I felt sick, and a poor child was to beat this tournament. If I don’t play, it could show Max that he has a big shot to hit.”

However, golf analyst Brandel Chamblee wasn’t happy with Kuchar’s reasoning, saying (via NBC Sports):

“Why did he take his first shot on 18? Because if he had a good shot, he would have hit his target and possibly disrupted the movement of Aaron Rai and the group in front of them. … If he wanted to quit, he could have quit a long time ago.”

Paige McKenzie also spoke about Kuchar’s decision to pull out of Monday’s match, saying (via Golfweek):

“Why would he tee off on 18 when the fairway wasn’t clear? To me, this was a clear mistake. That was just disrespectful. »

What’s noteworthy is that even if Kuchar bets on the 18th hole on Monday, he still won’t win the tournament. Plus, he’s unlikely to finish inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings. He is projected to rank 103rd in the FedExCup standings and will miss the playoffs.

A look back at Matt Kuchar’s performance in the final round of the 2024 Wyndham Championship.

After teeing off in the final round of the 2024 Wyndham Championship, Matt Kuchar made pars on his first four holes and birdied the fifth hole. Despite a strong beginning, he unfortunately ended up with a double Bogey the seventh.

On the nine rear, Kuchar started with a Bogey on the 10th and followed this with another Bogey on the 14th. He gathers two birds on his new back and is equivalent to the first to 12th place. Nevertheless, he still has to end his game in the last hall. If he makes a par on 18, he can maintain his position in the ranking. On the other hand, if he makes a bogey or a higher score on 18, he will move down in the ranking.
