Breaking: A Legacy Cast in Bronze, Chicago Cubs to Unveil New Statue Honoring Franchise Icon

Posted on April 23, 2025

The Chicago Cubs are preparing to immortalize another legend in bronze as they officially announced plans to unveil a new statue outside Wrigley Field in honor of franchise icon Javier Báez—known to Cubs fans simply as “Javy” or “El Mago.” The statue will stand as a tribute to the former shortstop’s electrifying play, swagger, and role in bringing a World Series championship to the North Side in 2016.

Set for unveiling on August 30, 2025, ahead of a marquee weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the statue will become the sixth to stand in Gallagher Way, joining Cubs greats like Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, and Ryne Sandberg.

“Javy Báez brought joy, magic, and a fierce competitive fire to the Cubs organization,” said Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts. “He was a fan favorite, a defensive wizard, and a key piece of a team that made history. This statue is a tribute to everything he gave the Cubs and this city.”

A Player Who Defied Physics and Convention

Báez, drafted by the Cubs in 2011, made his MLB debut in 2014 and quickly became one of the most thrilling players in the game. His no-look tags, aggressive base running, and flair for the dramatic earned him the nickname “El Mago”—Spanish for “The Magician.”

In 2016, Báez played a crucial role in the Cubs’ historic World Series run, showcasing elite defense and timely hitting. He would go on to earn two All-Star selections, a Silver Slugger Award, and finished second in NL MVP voting in 2018.

A Celebration of El Mago’s Legacy

The Cubs plan to host a full weekend of festivities to commemorate the unveiling. Báez, who now plays for the Detroit Tigers, is expected to attend the ceremony along with former teammates, family members, and special guests. The event will include a live Q&A, video tributes, and commemorative giveaways for fans.

“I’m honored beyond words,” Báez said in a statement. “Chicago will always be my baseball home. The fans here supported me from day one, and we shared moments together that will last a lifetime. To be remembered in front of Wrigley—it means everything.”

While Báez’s journey with the Cubs ended in 2021, his impact on the organization and the city never faded. His signature slides, fiery bat flips, and unmatched energy will now live on not just in highlights—but in bronze, for generations to come.
