BREAKING: Cubs ‘Massive’ Trade Lands All-Star and League’s Top Reliever

Posted on May 18, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have reportedly been actively pursuing great players such as Alex Bregman and Dylan Cease to help cap off an incredible offseason in the Windy City. However, none of these two pipe fantasies are likely to come true.

Bregman recently signed a massive contract with the Boston Red Sox. The Cubs could have used him, but he appeared to be a long shot throughout free agency. Cease could yet land in Chicago, but the San Diego Padres are reportedly demanding a high price for their ace.

Following the Kyle Tucker trade, the Cubs are unlikely to want to move another large haul of several top-ten prospects. However, they could look to sign another powerful Padres pitcher instead: closer Robert  Suarez.

This Padres-trade isn’t for Dylan Cease, but Chicago

Cubs lands a star

Padres, reliever Robert Suarez agree to 5-year deal through 2027 - NBC Sports

Suarez was among the league’s top relievers in 2024, dominating to the point that even after San Diego acquired Tanner Scott at the trade deadline, Suarez largely retained the closer role. He posted a 2.77 ERA with 35 saves, earning his first All-Star selection.
The Padres aren’t in a position where they need to trade Suarez, so any offer for the hard-throwing closer would have to be overwhelmingly compelling. This proposed deal accomplishes that while still aligning with the Cubs’ budget.
Ballesteros, 21, hit .289/.354/.471 in the minors in 2024. With San Diego lacking catching depth beyond top prospect Ethan Sala, adding a talented left-handed bat like Ballesteros would be a significant boost.
Neely, 24, is an imposing 6-foot-8 right-handed reliever with a dominant fastball and a devastating slider. Though he has limited MLB experience, his potential is undeniable.
If Suarez joins the Cubs’ bullpen, he would likely take over as the closer. While there might be debate between him and Ryan Pressly for the role, Suarez would be the logical choice.
Given Chicago’s aggressive push to contend, a move like this makes sense. Their farm system remains deep, and after this trade, few National League teams would boast a stronger roster than the Cubs.
