Breaking: Cubs Set to Land Another $87 Million All-Star Closer From Division Rival

Posted on April 13, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have won 9 of their first 15 games and are aiming to extend their lead in the National League Central. However, their bullpen performance is a concern. Out of the relievers who have pitched in at least three games, only four have an ERA of 4.00 or lower — a potential warning sign for the team. Fixing the bullpen could be urgent.

Matthew Sullivan of Athlon Sports suggests that help might come from within their own division, even if it’s an unusual move. He proposes that the Cubs make a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates for struggling All-Star closer David Bednar. Though Bednar was recently sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis after a rough start to the season, Sullivan thinks a change of scenery could help him bounce back.

Sullivan writes, “For this trade pitch, the Cubs and Pirates swing a rare intra-division trade, where the Pirates send former All-Star closer David Bednar to the Cubs,” noting that now may be the ideal time to trade for Bednar while his value is down.

Bednar previously benefited from a fresh start — after being acquired by the Pirates in 2021, he posted a 2.23 ERA that season following two tough years with the Padres. The 30-year-old righty is under team control through the 2026 season, so he wouldn’t just be a short-term rental. Because of that, the Cubs would likely need to offer more than a minimal return.

While Sullivan doesn’t detail the trade package, it’s reasonable to assume the Pirates would want young hitters who can contribute soon, especially with top pitching prospect Paul Skenes in the mix. Possible trade pieces from the Cubs could include James Triantos (their No. 5 prospect) or a package of two players like Jonathon Long (No. 13) and Ben Cowles (No. 22).
