Earlier this week, the Chicago Cubs made a second major trade with the Houston Astros, acquiring closer Ryan Pressly after getting Kyle Tucker earlier this winter.
Pressly is a good addition to the Cubs bullpen, which was fragile at the end of games in 2024. Now, Chicago might enter the free agent market to add another high-leverage arm or two to complement Pressly.
FanSided’s Michael Brakebill recently projected that the Cubs would sign 39-year-old veteran David Robertson in free agency. Robertson is expected to sign for $7 million, according to Spotrac.
“My favorite name from this list is David Robertson. Another former Cub who put up outstanding stats in a Cubs outfit, Robertson, had a 2.23 ERA and 14 saves in 2022,” Brakebill noted. Since then, between 2023 and 2024, he has a 3.01 ERA in 137.1 innings. Although Robertson is entering his 40th season, he appears to have plenty left in the tank and will have no trouble obtaining a deal with a major-league club this winter.”
Given that the Cubs still have $13 million before exceeding the $220 million threshold for the summer, Robertson’s pricing range most likely fits the Cubs’ financial needs.”
If the Cubs want a dependable veteran who has demonstrated the capacity to win, Robertson is the guy. The veteran has ERA+s of 132, 145, and 173 over the last three seasons. He still has a lot of gas in the tank, and the Cubs could certainly bring him back to Chicago for less than ten million dollars.
