Breaking: Former Longtime Division Rival Confirms Major Decision to Replace Cubs Head Coach Craig Counsell

Posted on May 17, 2025

St. Louis, Missouri, and Chicago, Illinois, are separated by less than 300 miles, a short distance that intensifies the National League Central rivalry between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. At present, the Cubs appear content with Craig Counsell as their manager. However, if the team ever finds itself in need of a new skipper, a familiar face from the Cardinals has expressed interest.

Former Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who retired after the 2022 MLB season, recently told The Athletic’s Katie Woo that he’s open to managing in the big leagues. While his preference would be to return to St. Louis, the nine-time Gold Glove Award winner is willing to consider any opportunity—including with the Cubs.

Yadier Molina eliminated himself from Cardinals managerial consideration with Cubs praise

“I’m loyal to the people who have supported me for many years,” Molina said to Woo. “I feel connected to the city of St. Louis, even though I’m not there right now.” He made it clear that he’d be open to managing any MLB team if given the chance. “This is baseball, right? If my family and I decide it’s the right move and I get the opportunity, I could manage anywhere… even the Chicago Cubs if they want.”

Molina has some managerial experience, having led Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, the Criollos de Caguas in the 2023-24 LBPRC season, and the Aguilas Cibaenas in the 2024-25 LIDOM season.
