Quarterback Mac Jones is set to join the San Francisco 49ers, four years after the team nearly selected him with the third overall pick.

Jones has agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract with $5 million guaranteed, according to a source familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday night. The contract, which has a maximum value of $11.5 million, has not yet been officially announced. NFL Network was the first to report the agreement.

Leading up to the 2021 draft, Jones was heavily linked to San Francisco after the team traded three first-round picks to acquire the No. 3 selection. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was deciding between Jones and Trey Lance before ultimately choosing Lance.

However, the decision did not pan out, as Lance struggled with injuries and adapting to Shanahan’s system. He started just four games over two seasons before being traded to Dallas for a fourth-round pick in August 2023, having lost the starting role to 2022 seventh-round pick Brock Purdy.

With Purdy now firmly established as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, Jones will join the team as a backup.
