Winston Trade Rumors: Giants Playing It Smart as Saints Take a Wait-and-See Approach
Since Derek Carr announced his retirement, speculation has swirled about a possible trade sending Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston back to New Orleans, where he could compete for the starting job. Saints defensive star Cameron Jordan even endorsed the idea publicly.
However, NFL insider Josina Anderson provided clarity on June 12, reporting that despite Jordan’s comments, the Saints aren’t rushing into a move. “New Orleans will continue to assess this position and its young players into training camp,” she said, noting that the priority remains evaluating their current roster. A trade for Winston, if it happens, would more likely come later in the summer.
Why This Is Good News for the Giants
This measured approach actually works in the Giants’ favor. After a major offseason overhaul at quarterback, including the additions of Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart, New York has stocked up at the position. Winston’s role as a seasoned option remains valuable — especially in the event of an injury or if Dart isn’t ready for Week 1.
Trading Winston too soon could leave the Giants vulnerable, particularly if Wilson were to go down in camp. With Dart still developing and Tommy DeVito viewed more as a QB4, keeping Winston through at least the bulk of training camp offers valuable insurance and flexibility.
Winston’s Veteran Presence Still Matters
Beyond his experience, Winston is highly respected in NFL locker rooms. He’s been praised by former coaches as a positive mentor — a key asset for a young quarterback like Dart.
While his presence slightly reduces reps for others, the impact will be felt more by DeVito than by the top two quarterbacks. Realistically, DeVito is unlikely to factor into the starting conversation, and his snaps may already be limited.
Ultimately, there’s little downside in holding onto Winston for now. If the Giants feel comfortable by late August — or even early in the regular season — they’ll have the option to trade him to another QB-needy team, possibly at an even better value.
