Breaking: Kansas City Chiefs Lose Another Key Starter To Rivals Due To…

Posted on April 8, 2025

As the Kansas City Chiefs chase a historic third consecutive Super Bowl title, head coach Andy Reid has acknowledged that a key offensive player is unlikely to return next season. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz, who joined the team in the offseason, is expected to depart after the current campaign.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Reid admitted that Wentz is unlikely to remain with the team beyond this season. The veteran quarterback signed a one-year deal worth just over $3 million but has seen limited action behind superstar Patrick Mahomes. While Wentz played briefly this season, he may get more playing time in the Chiefs’ final regular-season game against the Denver Broncos, a game that holds little significance for their playoff seeding. Kansas City had already secured the AFC’s No. 1 seed and clinched their ninth straight AFC West title.

Wentz, a former Philadelphia Eagles starter, later played for the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders before serving as a backup for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. Reid praised Wentz’s professionalism and ability, saying, “I’m one of his biggest fans. I liked what he did before his injuries in Philly and what I saw last year with the Rams. I’d selfishly like to keep him, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible.”

With several teams in need of quarterbacks, Wentz is expected to explore free agency in hopes of securing a starting role. Reid emphasized that Wentz deserves to be a starter, highlighting his discipline, work ethic, and strong study habits.

Beyond Wentz’s situation, Reid also provided injury updates on two key players: running back Isiah Pacheco and left tackle DJ Humphries. Pacheco, who exited last week’s game with a rib injury, is expected to be available for the playoffs. However, Reid said he would likely hold Pacheco out of practice this week to ensure he is fresh for the postseason.

Humphries, who suffered a hamstring strain in his Chiefs debut, is progressing well in rehab. However, Reid remained cautious, stating that he wants to see Humphries in practice before determining his availability. “He’s doing good, but rehab is different than playing on the field,” Reid explained.

As the Chiefs gear up for another Super Bowl run, they’ll continue to monitor their injured players while preparing for potential roster changes in the offseason.
