BREAKING: Legendary former Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery—now with the Blues—delivered a stunning message aimed directly at current Bruins coach Marco Sturm..

Posted on June 16, 2025

In a moment that has sent shockwaves through the NHL community, legendary former Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery, now leading the bench for the St. Louis Blues, delivered a stunning and deeply personal message aimed squarely at his former club—and, more pointedly, at current Bruins head coach Marco Sturm.

Speaking during a post-practice media session in St. Louis, Montgomery took an unexpected detour when asked about the state of the Bruins, who recently suffered a first-round playoff exit and have struggled to recapture their dominance since his departure in 2024.

“I still care about that team, I really do,” Montgomery began. “You don’t spend years in a place like Boston and just forget about it. But what I’ve seen from them this season? That’s not the standard we built. That’s not Bruins hockey.”

It was an uncharacteristically blunt comment from Montgomery, known more for his even-keeled demeanor and strategic brilliance than for making headlines with inflammatory quotes. But it was clear that something had struck a nerve.

“I don’t know what Marco [Sturm] is trying to implement over there, but it doesn’t look like accountability. It doesn’t look like pride in the jersey. It doesn’t look like the culture we fought to restore,” he continued. “You can talk systems all day long, but if you don’t have buy-in, if your locker room is fragmented, if your identity is lost—then you’re just another team.”

Montgomery, who guided the Bruins to a Presidents’ Trophy and multiple deep playoff runs during his tenure, was widely praised for revitalizing the team’s defensive structure, instilling discipline, and getting the most out of veteran leadership while nurturing younger talent. His abrupt dismissal following a disappointing playoff finish in 2024 shocked fans and analysts alike. Many believed his firing was premature, a scapegoat move in an organization that had perhaps grown impatient despite regular-season dominance.

Since joining the Blues, Montgomery has helped rejuvenate a roster in transition, bringing St. Louis back into playoff contention while building a tight-knit, defensively resilient group reminiscent of his best Bruins teams.

Meanwhile, under Sturm—himself a Bruins alumnus and a respected former player—Boston has struggled to maintain its identity. Despite a promising core, inconsistent goaltending, and questions about locker room leadership have plagued the team.

“Being a Bruin means something,” Montgomery continued. “It’s not about trends or systems du jour. It’s about being relentless, playing for each other, and making that city proud every night. If Marco doesn’t get that, maybe someone else needs to remind him.”

Montgomery’s words were met with raised eyebrows and immediate speculation across the league. While some viewed his comments as an emotional critique rooted in passion for a former team, others saw it as a calculated shot—perhaps even a warning.

Asked whether he would ever consider returning to Boston in the future, Montgomery paused for a moment before responding:

“You never say never in this business. But they’ve got a guy in place now. What I will say is: I’m proud of what we built, and I’ll always believe the Bruins can be great again—if they remember who they are.”

Sturm, who has not yet responded publicly to Montgomery’s remarks, now faces intensifying scrutiny as pressure builds in Boston’s notoriously demanding sports environment. Whether he takes the comments as a challenge or an insult remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: Jim Montgomery’s legacy in Boston is far from forgotten—and his voice, even from afar, still carries weight in the heart of Bruins Nation.
