The Chicago Cubs boast an impressive rotation, headlined by two talented left-handers, Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele, along with solid options like Jameson Taillon and Matthew Boyd. However, what they truly lack is a dominant right-handed starter. Relying heavily on lefties creates an imbalance, making it easier for opposing hitters to adjust over a series.
One potential solution could be acquiring San Diego Padres starter Dylan Cease, who has been a frequent name in trade discussions this offseason. A recent proposal from Athlon Sports suggests sending Cease to Chicago in exchange for outfielder Seiya Suzuki, pitcher Nate Pearson, and catching prospect Moises Ballesteros. While it’s a significant package, Cease is arguably the best available pitcher on the market.
Suzuki, who is owed $19 million in both 2024 and 2026 before hitting free agency, could be a fit for the Padres, especially following Jurickson Profar’s departure. Additionally, moving Cease would allow San Diego to avoid giving him the massive contract extension he is expected to command.
Cease has cemented himself as one of the top right-handed starters in baseball, finishing fourth in Cy Young voting in 2024 while striking out 224 batters across 189.1 innings. Over the past four seasons, he has been remarkably reliable, averaging 33 starts and 179 innings per year.
For the Cubs, this trade would elevate their rotation into one of the league’s best. Although parting with Pearson might be tough as he continues to develop, selling high on him could be a smart move. Suzuki’s inclusion adds intrigue, given his history with the Cubs and recent contract extension, but with plenty of outfield depth and promising prospects on the rise, Chicago can afford to make this deal.
