He emphasized the Cubs’ clear need for a power hitter and a reliable first baseman, a void they sought to fill during the trade deadline by targeting Alonso. However, the Mets opted to retain their star slugger, as they were still competitive throughout the season.
Alonso is expected to be one of the top free agents available, and while he turned down a substantial extension offer of seven years for $158 million last summer, reports indicate he could command a six-year deal worth around $174 million in free agency.
The Cubs have the financial capability to pursue him, making him a viable option for their lineup.
Despite Alonso’s talent, the landscape of free agency complicates matters. Teams like the Mets and Mariners are also eyeing him, especially with the Mets expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of Juan Soto.
While the Cubs can compete financially, there’s little indication that Soto would consider them as a top choice, with the Mets and Yankees being seen as frontrunners for his services.
