BREAKING NEWS: Pittsburgh Steelers Officially part ways with tough former Patriots offensive lineman Lecitus Smith During the NFL Football Game

Posted on May 21, 2025

In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have waived offensive lineman Lecitus Smith, just two months after claiming him off waivers from the New England Patriots. The 26-year-old guard, originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, has had a tumultuous journey through the league.

A Brief Stint in Pittsburgh

Smith joined the Steelers in late March 2025, adding depth to their offensive line as they retooled for the upcoming season. At 6’3″ and 314 pounds, Smith brought versatility, having played both guard and tackle positions during his time with the Patriots. However, he did not appear in any games for Pittsburgh, and his departure leaves the team with one less option on their interior line.

Career Overview

Before his time with the Steelers, Smith’s NFL career included stops with the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, and Green Bay Packers. He played in 18 career games, starting three, and was known for his physicality and adaptability on the offensive line. Despite his potential, Smith struggled to secure a permanent spot on any roster, leading to his release from the Patriots in March 2025 .

Steelers’ Offensive Line Outlook

The Steelers are undergoing significant changes to their offensive line. Broderick Jones is expected to move from right tackle to left tackle, while Troy Fautanu is set to take over at right tackle after missing his entire rookie season due to injury . The team is also looking to develop younger talent, with players like Demontrey Jacobs and Ben Brown re-signed to provide depth and competition .

Looking Ahead

With the NFL season approaching, the Steelers will continue to evaluate their offensive line options. The release of Smith signals the team’s commitment to refining their roster and ensuring they have the best combination of players to protect their quarterback and establish a strong running game. As training camp progresses, all eyes will be on how the offensive line develops and who emerges as key contributors for the 2025 season.

For now, Lecitus Smith’s future in the NFL remains uncertain. Given his experience and versatility, he may attract interest from other teams looking to bolster their offensive line depth. However, his journey serves as a reminder of the challenges players face in securing a long-term role in the league
