BREAKING NEWS: Veteran Reliever Walks Away From Cubs, Chooses Free Agency After Troubling Start—Uncertainty Surrounds Next Move

Posted on April 12, 2025

In a surprising turn of events, a prominent MLB closer has chosen to leave his current team and enter free agency after a season filled with inconsistency and missed opportunities. The decision was made following a series of struggles that saw his role in the bullpen diminish. Despite high hopes at the start of the season, the player was unable to find his rhythm, and his performance on the mound never matched the expectations that came with his contract.

While initially brought in to serve as either a set-up man or compete for the closer role, the struggles only intensified. Despite a few bright spots in key games, the player couldn’t reclaim the dominance that once defined his career. As the season wore on, the team found itself making difficult decisions regarding the bullpen, eventually leading to the player being designated for assignment, marking a clear turning point in his tenure.

Hector Neris

That player is none other than former Chicago Cubs closer Héctor Neris. After a tough season with the Cubs, where he posted an 8-4 record and a 3.89 ERA in 46 appearances, Neris struggled with control and consistency. Despite saving 17 games in 22 chances, his strikeout-to-walk ratio and the overall performance left much to be desired. Eventually, he was waived and released by the Cubs, making it evident that both the team and Neris needed a change.

Neris’s decision to enter free agency was not a hasty one, but rather a calculated choice to pursue a fresh start. At 35 years old, he felt that he still had much to offer and believed that a change of scenery would give him the opportunity to reclaim his top form. His time in Houston from 2021-23, where he posted solid numbers and was a reliable arm out of the bullpen, only added to his confidence that he could find a team where he would be valued once again.

Now, Neris looks forward to a new chapter in his career. Free agency gives him the chance to land with a team that can offer him the role and responsibility he believes he can still thrive in. As several MLB teams are seeking experienced bullpen arms, Neris’s decision opens the door for what could be a significant opportunity for him in the coming months.
