Breaking: PFF Names the 49ers’ Three Best Players Entering the 2025 Season

Posted on May 22, 2025

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, Pro Football Focus (PFF) has released its analysis of the San Francisco 49ers’ roster, highlighting the top three players who are expected to play the most crucial roles. According to PFF, the 49ers’ standout trio consists of edge rusher Nick Bosa, linebacker Fred Warner, and tight end George Kittle. These selections are based on a combination of elite performance metrics, consistency, and overall impact on the team’s success.

Nick Bosa: Dominant Edge Presence

Nick Bosa has long been recognized as one of the most disruptive defensive ends in the NFL. Since being drafted in 2019, Bosa has consistently elevated his game, and PFF’s latest grades back that up. He has posted a defensive grade above 84.0 for six straight seasons, with the last three seasons all scoring over 90.0. This level of consistency places him among the league’s elite pass rushers. Bosa’s ability to pressure quarterbacks, disrupt plays in the backfield, and anchor the 49ers’ defensive line makes him indispensable.

His technique, explosiveness off the snap, and relentless motor are key reasons why opposing offenses have to game plan specifically for him. As long as Bosa remains healthy, he will continue to be a cornerstone of San Francisco’s defensive identity.

Fred Warner: Elite Coverage Linebacker

Fred Warner continues to be the heart and soul of the 49ers’ defense. Known for his sideline-to-sideline range and football IQ, Warner’s performance in 2024 earned him an 88.4 coverage grade—just shy of his career-high 91.1 set in 2020. His presence in the middle of the field neutralizes tight ends and running backs in the passing game, and his leadership is evident both on and off the field.

Recently, Warner signed a three-year, $63 million extension, making him the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. This contract not only reflects his value to the team but also solidifies his role as a long-term leader in the locker room. Warner’s versatility in coverage, tackling, and play diagnosis keeps the 49ers’ defense among the league’s best.

George Kittle: Dual-Threat Playmaker

George Kittle remains one of the most dynamic tight ends in the NFL. In 2024, he posted a WAR (Wins Above Replacement) of 0.58, which ranked second on the team behind quarterback Brock Purdy. Kittle’s value goes beyond just receiving stats—his blocking ability is crucial to both the run game and pass protection schemes.

Kittle’s combination of toughness, athleticism, and charisma makes him a fan favorite and a nightmare for defenders. Whether he’s dragging defenders for extra yards or sealing the edge for a running back, Kittle’s impact on the game is profound.

Notably Absent: Brock Purdy

One of the biggest surprises in PFF’s list is the omission of quarterback Brock Purdy. Despite signing a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension, Purdy was not listed among the top three players. This decision has sparked debate among fans and analysts, as many believe Purdy’s leadership and efficiency warrant a spot. However, PFF’s methodology emphasizes consistency and multi-year dominance—something Bosa, Warner, and Kittle have clearly demonstrated.

Together, this trio represents the foundation of a team still chasing a Super Bowl title in 2025.
