The Boston Red Sox bullpen was a significant weakness in 2024, and addressing its shortcomings will be a priority this offseason. In the American League, only the bullpens of the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and the 121-loss Chicago White Sox fared worse.
Fortunately, the Red Sox front office has already begun taking steps to improve the bullpen for 2025. According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, Boston has reached an agreement with free-agent reliever Justin Wilson.
While more moves are expected, Wilson’s signing represents an early attempt to bolster a unit that struggled to provide consistency throughout the season.
Justin Wilson brings a wealth of experience to the Boston Red Sox bullpen, having compiled a 34-29 record with a 3.61 ERA, 561 strikeouts, and a .231 opponent batting average over his 12-year MLB career. During that time, he pitched for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, and Detroit Tigers.
However, injuries and Tommy John surgery in recent years have taken a toll on Wilson’s effectiveness and availability. His 2024 season with the Reds reflected those struggles, as he posted a 1-5 record with a 5.59 ERA, a .286 opponent batting average, and a 1.46 WHIP over 46 2/3 innings pitched. Despite those challenges, his 51-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio hints at flashes of his former dominance.
It remains uncertain whether Wilson can make a significant impact for Boston in 2025. Still, his past success suggests potential for a rebound. Joining a storied franchise like the Red Sox could provide the environment he needs to rediscover the form that made him a reliable reliever earlier in his career.
