Breaking; Yankees Lose Pitcher to Rival Red Sox: Nick Burdi Joins Boston – Did New York Miss Out on a Hidden Gem?

Posted on May 13, 2025

The Boston Red Sox have signed former New York Yankees pitcher Nick Burdi, as the veteran reliever confirmed on Instagram. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 1-0 record with a 1.86 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 9.2 innings for the Yankees last season. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, Burdi will report to minor league camp, as his contract does not include an invitation to major league spring training. It remains unclear whether his deal includes an opt-out clause.

Originally a second-round pick in 2014, Burdi has struggled with consistency throughout his career, owning a 6.48 ERA over 31 games. He made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018 and also pitched for the Chicago Cubs. Control has been a major issue for Burdi, as he’s walked 19 batters in just 25 career innings.

At best, Burdi provides experienced depth for the Red Sox, having shown flashes of potential during his time with the Yankees. He is expected to start the season at Triple-A, likely in a setup or middle-relief role. Burdi hasn’t served as a closer since his final year at Louisville in 2014.

Injuries have plagued Burdi’s career, with Tommy John surgeries in 2017 and 2020, as well as thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in 2019. While with the Cubs, he missed most of the 2023 season after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. A hip injury sidelined him after May 23, cutting his season short. Despite these setbacks, the Red Sox are taking a low-risk chance on Burdi, hoping he can contribute as a reliable arm in their minor league system.
