CHICAGO NEWS: Cubs’ 2025 performance draws honest in managers assessment

Posted on April 28, 2025

The Chicago Cubs continued their impressive turnaround in the 2025 season with a statement-making two-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field this week. The victory not only extended Chicago’s recent hot streak, but also served as a form of payback after the Dodgers swept the Cubs in Tokyo to open the MLB season.

Since that opening series overseas, the Cubs have transformed into one of the most balanced and competitive teams in the National League. Their progress hasn’t gone unnoticed—especially by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

“This team is a completely different ball club than the one we saw in Tokyo,” Roberts said, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN. “They’re playing a lot better.”

Chicago’s impressive play against the Dodgers hasn’t been a one-off. In mid-April, the Cubs took two out of three games from the Dodgers in Los Angeles. These back-to-back series wins against one of baseball’s top teams underscore how far the Cubs have come since their sluggish start.

Now sitting at 16-10, the Cubs lead the National League Central division, holding a three-game advantage over the second-place Milwaukee Brewers. Their winning record is no fluke. The Cubs are clicking on multiple fronts—offensively, defensively, and on the mound.

Offseason acquisition Kyle Tucker is quickly proving to be one of the best moves of the year. The former Astros star is currently performing at an MVP-caliber level. Catcher Carson Kelly has also found his rhythm at the plate, providing key offensive support. Meanwhile, outfielders Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong are contributing consistently, helping to fuel the Cubs’ surge.

The team has managed to find success despite early struggles from star shortstop Dansby Swanson. If Swanson can find his form as the season progresses, the Cubs could become an even more formidable threat.

On the pitching side, left-hander Shota Imanaga has been sensational and would likely be a top candidate for the National League Cy Young Award if the season ended today. Matthew Boyd has also impressed in the starting rotation, giving the Cubs valuable innings. While there is still a need for more consistency from the rest of the rotation, Chicago’s pitching staff has generally been reliable enough to keep the team competitive.

Looking ahead, the Cubs may explore trade options to bolster their rotation before the July trade deadline. With their current momentum, adding another quality arm could solidify their position as legitimate contenders in the National League.

Chicago returns to action on Friday afternoon with a matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies, hoping to continue their winning ways. With strong performances on both sides of the ball and growing confidence, the Cubs are beginning to look like a team built for October baseball.
