Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes Receive Major News Following NFL Draft

Posted on May 5, 2025

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a disappointing showing in Super Bowl LIX, where they missed a golden opportunity to capture their third consecutive Lombardi Trophy and make NFL history.

Instead, the game went in the opposite direction, as the Philadelphia Eagles handed them a 40-22 defeat. One glaring issue that emerged—both in the Super Bowl and throughout the previous season—was the offensive line’s inability to protect star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked six times, the most in any game of his career.

In response, the Chiefs used their first-round pick (No. 32 overall) in the 2025 NFL draft to select Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Simmons. On Sunday night, the team received more good news: Simmons officially signed his four-year, fully guaranteed rookie contract with the organization.

According to his agents Drew Rosenhaus, Robert Bailey, and Oliver Chell, the deal is worth approximately $14 million

This marks an important development for Mahomes, who now gains another key piece up front in Josh Simmons — a highly regarded offensive tackle who helped Ohio State win a national championship during his time with the program.

However, Simmons is coming off a torn patellar tendon suffered in October. Despite the injury, the Chiefs remain optimistic, with expectations that he’ll be ready for training camp.

While Simmons may not start right away in Kansas City — likely competing with Jaylon Moore for snaps — his potential is undeniable. Prior to his injury during his junior season at Ohio State, some scouts viewed him as a possible top-15 pick.

Now, with a fully guaranteed rookie deal in hand and a high ceiling, Simmons has a prime opportunity to develop into a long-term anchor on an offensive line protecting one of the game’s all-time greats — as the Chiefs set their sights on another Super Bowl run.
