Colts make their first big splash of the offseason! Safety Cam Bynum signs with Indianapolis for 4 yr / $60M

Posted on June 2, 2025

The Indianapolis Colts kicked off their 2025 offseason with a bold move, signing former Minnesota Vikings safety Cam Bynum to a four-year, $60 million contract. The deal, which includes $36 million guaranteed, marks the first major acquisition by GM Chris Ballard this offseason and signals a clear commitment to bolstering the secondary.

Bynum, 26, is coming off a breakout season in Minnesota where he emerged as a key piece in Brian Flores’ aggressive defensive scheme. He recorded 95 tackles, three interceptions, and 10 pass deflections in 2024, earning praise for his versatility, high football IQ, and leadership in the locker room. Originally a fourth-round pick in 2021, Bynum made a name for himself with his range in coverage and physicality against the run—two traits the Colts have sorely needed on the back end of their defense.

The addition of Bynum immediately upgrades a Colts secondary that struggled with consistency last season. Pairing him alongside rising star Julian Blackmon—assuming he is re-signed or extended—gives Indianapolis one of the most dynamic and interchangeable safety duos in the AFC. Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is expected to get creative with Bynum’s deployment, utilizing his ability to line up deep, in the box, or even in the slot.

“This move is about bringing in a tone-setter,” Ballard said in a statement. “Cam is a high-character guy who plays fast, smart, and tough. We see him as a foundational piece for what we’re building.”

For Bynum, the decision to join Indianapolis was rooted in opportunity and fit.

“I loved what the Colts are doing here,” Bynum said during his introductory press conference. “This is a young, hungry team with a clear vision, and I’m excited to be part of it. I’m ready to help this team win and bring energy every Sunday.”

The move comes as Indianapolis looks to build around second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson and solidify the defensive side of the ball. With cap space still available, Bynum may be the first of several signings as the Colts aim to push for playoff contention in 2025.

As free agency unfolds, one thing is clear: the Colts are no longer sitting quietly. With Cam Bynum in the fold, the Horseshoe has taken a decisive step forward.
