CONFIRMED: Pittsburgh Steelers officially defeats New England Patriots to sign a rising Star wide receiver for $55 million to replace George Pickens

Posted on June 30, 2025

In a bold and strategic move that has sent shockwaves throughout the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers have officially landed rising star wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks from the Green Bay Packers in a deal worth $55 million over four years. The signing comes after a tense bidding war with the New England Patriots, who were also aggressively pursuing Wicks to bolster their receiving corps.

Wicks, 24, emerged as a standout target in Green Bay last season, racking up 986 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns, demonstrating elite route-running skills, reliable hands, and explosive playmaking ability. His breakout year made him one of the most coveted young wideouts in the league, and Pittsburgh wasted no time securing him as the centerpiece of their offensive plans moving forward.

The move comes amid rising speculation about the Steelers’ intentions with former top receiver George Pickens. While the team has not officially announced a trade or release, sources close to the organization confirm that Wicks is being brought in to “replace and upgrade” the WR1 role previously held by Pickens.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan praised Wicks in a statement released Friday morning:

> “Dontayvion is a dynamic young talent who brings toughness, intelligence, and explosive ability to our offense. We’re thrilled to add someone of his caliber, especially given how competitive the market was. He’s exactly the kind of player we want leading our receiver room.”

League insiders report that the New England Patriots were strong contenders throughout negotiations, with head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt viewing Wicks as a long-term solution to their offensive struggles. However, Pittsburgh’s aggressive offer — reportedly front-loaded with $30 million guaranteed — ultimately sealed the deal.

The Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, is expected to feature Wicks heavily in the 2025 scheme, utilizing his versatility both on the outside and in the slot. His arrival gives quarterback Kenny Pickett a legitimate WR1 weapon and may serve to reinvigorate a passing game that struggled with consistency last season.

Wicks expressed his excitement in his introductory press conference on Friday afternoon:

> “When Pittsburgh called, I knew it was the right fit. This franchise has a history of greatness, especially at wide receiver, and I want to be part of the next great chapter. I can’t wait to get to work.”

While fans in Green Bay expressed disappointment over losing one of their most promising young stars, Steelers Nation is buzzing with optimism. The move signals a clear intent by Pittsburgh to retool and compete at a high level in the AFC North — and to do so with fresh firepower on offense.

As for George Pickens, trade rumors continue to swirl, with several teams reportedly inquiring about his availability. For now, all eyes are on Dontayvion Wicks, who is set to begin the next chapter of his career wearing black and gold.
