Cubs, Braves Could Acquire $70 Million Ace at Deadline if Astros Struggle

Posted on April 14, 2025

Cubs and Braves Eyeing Potential Trade for Astros’ Ace Framber Valdez

As the MLB season heats up, the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves are gearing up for a potential push to win their respective divisions. With the trade deadline looming, both teams are on the lookout for ways to strengthen their rotations, and one name that has emerged as a potential target is Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez.

Valdez, a 31-year-old left-hander, is set to become a free agent in 2026, and the Astros have not made a significant effort to extend him. This has led to speculation that Valdez could be available at the trade deadline, particularly if the Astros struggle in the first half of the season.

For the Cubs and Braves, acquiring Valdez would be a major coup. He is a proven starter with a strong track record, and he would easily slot into the top of either team’s rotation. The Cubs, in particular, have been inconsistent this season, and adding a pitcher of Valdez’s caliber could help stabilize their rotation and make a deep postseason run.

The Braves, meanwhile, have been one of the surprises of the season, and adding Valdez would give them an extra boost as they look to win the NL East. With Valdez on board, the Braves would have a formidable rotation that could match up with anyone in the league.

In terms of what it would take to acquire Valdez, the Cubs and Braves would likely need to give up two top-15 prospects. This is a significant price to pay, but for a pitcher of Valdez’s caliber, it may be worth it. Valdez is projected to sign a three-year, $70 million contract, which works out to an average of $23.3 million per year.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Cubs and Braves will likely be keeping a close eye on the Astros’ situation. If the Astros struggle and fall out of contention, Valdez could become available, and either team would be wise to pounce. With Valdez on board, the Cubs or Braves would have a significantly improved rotation and a much better chance of making a deep postseason run.
