Cubs Set To Land Another Three-Time All-Star This Will Have Far Reaching Consequence.!!

Posted on April 14, 2025

The Chicago Cubs’ 2025 season began with a rough start, as they lost both games in the Tokyo Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. As they prepare for their stateside opener on Thursday, concerns about the team’s starting rotation remain. Currently, the Cubs are using a five-man rotation that includes Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, and Ben Brown. While they likely have confidence in the first three pitchers, rumors indicate they are looking to upgrade the back end of their rotation.

One potential trade target for the Cubs is veteran pitcher Sonny Gray. Although the St. Louis Cardinals may be hesitant to trade the three-time All-Star to a divisional rival, they are in the early stages of a rebuild and could be looking to acquire young talent. Gray, the 2023 AL Cy Young runner-up, had a strong 2023 season, going 13-9 with a 3.84 ERA and 203 strikeouts in 166.1 innings.

The Cubs, with one of the strongest farm systems in baseball, featuring seven top-100 prospects (the most in the league), could offer a package of younger players in exchange for Gray. On the other hand, the Cardinals have a weaker farm system, particularly in the infield and outfield, and might be interested in adding young assets. Although trades between the two rivals are rare, St. Louis has been looking to offload salary, which could make the Cubs a good fit for Gray.

Gray is owed $25 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026, with a club option for $30 million in 2027 and a $5 million buyout.
