CUBS TRADE MOVES: Chicago Cubs Cut Ties With First Baseman Justin Turner After Poor Outing With Giants. As Cubs Make Third Base Decision After Nolan Arenado Update.

Posted on May 11, 2025

In a flurry of roster changes and strategic redirection, the Chicago Cubs have officially cut ties with veteran first baseman Justin Turner following his underwhelming performance with the San Francisco Giants. Turner, who was acquired in a short-term deal to provide leadership and offensive depth, failed to meet expectations during his stint, struggling at the plate and lacking the defensive consistency the Cubs were hoping for in a transitional year.

The 39-year-old infielder was brought in to add experience and veteran presence to the clubhouse. However, after a string of poor outings and limited production, the Cubs made the tough decision to move on, opting to free up space for younger talent and reallocate resources toward rebuilding key areas of the roster. Turner’s departure comes as the Cubs shift their focus to a new phase of player development, emphasizing long-term growth over short-term stopgaps.

Meanwhile, the club’s attention has also turned to the hot corner as speculation intensifies regarding a potential move involving superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado. While rumors have circulated for weeks about Chicago’s interest in acquiring the All-Star infielder, the latest update suggests that trade talks have cooled. The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly placed a high asking price on Arenado, causing Cubs management to take a step back and explore alternative solutions for solidifying third base.

With Arenado’s situation still unresolved, the Cubs are expected to look internally for a more cost-effective solution at third. Young talents like Christopher Morel and Nick Madrigal are among the names being considered to take on increased responsibilities, as the front office continues to weigh short-term needs against long-term sustainability.

President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer briefly addressed the club’s recent moves, stating, “We remain committed to building a competitive team not just for this season, but for the seasons to come. Every roster move we make is with that vision in mind.”

The shake-up with Turner and the uncertainty at third base underscore the Cubs’ evolving identity—one caught between making bold moves for star power and trusting in homegrown development. As the trade deadline looms, fans will be watching closely to see whether Chicago makes another aggressive move—or holds firm on its developing core.
