ESPN NEWS: Colts GM Chris Ballard Claims This Defender is Listed as Colts’ Most Dangerous Addition

Posted on June 1, 2025

The Indianapolis Colts had one mission this offseason: fix the defense, particularly the secondary. And General Manager Chris Ballard made a bold move to do just that by signing former 49ers star cornerback Charvarius Ward in free agency. According to Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski, Ward is not just another addition he’s the most dangerous pickup the Colts made this offseason.

While many expected first-round tight end Tyler Warren to be the standout new face in Indianapolis, Sobleski argued that Ward’s arrival carries more weight. “The first-round selection of multipurpose tight end Tyler Warren may seem like the obvious answer,” Sobleski wrote. “However, the front office’s neglect of the secondary over the last two years pinpoints the acquisition of cornerback Charvarius Ward as the linchpin to this offseason.”

Ballard, who has often favored building through the draft, especially on defense, watched his investments in the secondary fall short in 2024. The Colts finished in the bottom seven of the league in pass defense, surrendering big plays and struggling to contain opposing quarterbacks. Now, with the hire of seasoned defensive coordinator **Lou Anarumo** and the signing of Ward, Indianapolis is hoping to turn the tide.

Ward, 29, comes to the Colts after a mixed 2024 season with San Francisco. While he struggled at times, he’s only a year removed from a Pro Bowl-caliber 2023 campaign in which he was one of the league’s top shutdown corners. Ballard and Anarumo are banking on Ward returning to form in a scheme that better suits his strengths—particularly zone coverage and physical press techniques.

“Charvarius gives us flexibility and experience in a young secondary,” Ballard said during a press conference. “He’s been a No. 1 corner before, and he’ll step into that role again here. We believe he still has elite football ahead of him.”

The Colts also added veteran safety Cam Bynum and rotational lineman Neville Gallimore, but neither brings the ceiling or impact that Ward potentially does. If Ward thrives, it could elevate a Colts defense that has lacked a true identity in recent seasons.

In a division where stopping quarterbacks like C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence is crucial, the addition of Ward could be the game-changer Ballard has long been searching for.
