While the Chicago Cubs are busy trying to run away with the NL Central crown, it’s also that time of year when the focus also starts turning towards the future. The MLB Draft is just a few months away, and while the Cubs aren’t on the clock yet, they are sitting pretty with a relatively early slot. That’s why it looks like they’ll be able to grab the prospect many fans have been clamoring for in Tyler Bremner.
MLB Insider Jim Callis put out his first official mock of the season earlier this week and the expert believes the Cubs are going to get the young pitcher they badly need at the No. 17 pick in July’s draft.
Cubs linked to electric college arm Tyler Bremner in MLB mock draft
Should the Chicago Cubs indeed manage to land Tyler Bremner, it would mean they do indeed land one of the top college pitchers in the country. A guy who is capable of mowing opponents down with a fastball that can touch 98 mph and a changeup that scouts have given a 70 grade.
There is the added bonus that Bremmer already knows how to pitch both as a starter and as a closer, just in case the Cubs decide that he’s better suited for the back end of the bullpen, especially if they want to see him up sooner, rather than later in the next year or two.
Callis did point out that Bremner has had a bit of an up-and-down season so far for UC Santa Barbara in what is his first year where he’s spent the entire campaign in the starting rotation:
“Bremner joined [Jamie]Arnold atop the college pitching crop before an inconsistent first two months to his season, but he’s starting to rally with four double-digit strikeout outings in his last five starts. He owns the most wicked changeup in this class.”
On the season, Bremner is just 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA, but he has fanned 88 in just 64 innings pitched. It’s worth pointing out that without an up and down 2025, he probably doesn’t fall to the Chicago Cubs at No. 17, considering last year he was much, much more impressive, posting an 11-1 record with a 2.54 earned run average.
