Flyers Eye KHL Star and NHL Free Agents in Bold Offseason Moves

Posted on June 8, 2025

The Philadelphia Flyers offseason buzz is heating up with intriguing developments surrounding potential roster upgrades.

At the center of the speculation is Maxim Shabanov, a dynamic 24-year-old forward from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), whose arrival could significantly bolster the Flyers’ lineup for the 2025–26 NHL season.

According to Sport-Express columnist Igor Eronko, Shabanov is set to join the Flyers, though local Philadelphia media maintain the situation remains fluid with no official confirmation yet.

Shabanov’s resume is impressive: standing at 5-foot-8 and weighing 157 pounds, he defies his smaller stature with elite production. He finished third in KHL scoring for the 2024–25 regular season, tallying 67 points (23 goals, 44 assists) across 65 games and played a pivotal role in his team’s run to the Gagarin Cup Final, ranking second in playoff scoring with 10 goals and 10 assists.

What makes Shabanov particularly exciting is his blend of speed, hockey IQ, and skill, attributes showcased in standout moments such as his five-point playoff game in April.

Versatile as both a center and winger, he projects as a middle-six forward who could grow into a vital offensive contributor. Flyers insiders acknowledge the potential upside Shabanov brings, especially as a young player entering his prime, offering hope for strengthening Philadelphia’s forward corps.

Beyond Shabanov, the Flyers are also linked to several notable NHL free agents, particularly through head coach Rick Tocchet’s connections. Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague emerges as a possible target.

Despite a challenging season statistically and limited playing time on a stacked Vegas blue line, Hague’s imposing size (6-foot-6, 245 pounds) could add depth to Philadelphia’s defense. He might slot in as a left-side bottom-pairing option, potentially moving Egor Zamula down the lineup.

Additionally, speculation surrounds former Vancouver Canucks players Brock Boeser, Noah Juulsen, and Pius Suter, all free agents reportedly considered due to Tocchet’s past coaching ties.

Juulsen offers physicality on defense but struggled with possession metrics last season, while Boeser, a proven goal scorer, may command a price tag that tests the Flyers’ timeline and salary cap. Suter, a two-way third-line center, seems redundant given the Flyers’ commitment to Noah Cates, though Tocchet’s familiarity with his game keeps options open.

While some of these connections remain speculative, they underscore the Flyers’ intent to leverage Tocchet’s influence in free agency and potentially reshape their roster for the upcoming season. With the 2025 NHL Draft also looming, Philadelphia’s offseason moves will be closely watched as they aim to build a competitive team.
