Gage Workman Breaks Silence Amid Cubs-White Sox Trade

Posted on April 29, 2025

After a rough start to the year for third baseman Gage Workman, the Chicago Cubs decided to part ways with the 25-year-old. The Cubs initially designated Workman for assignment before the White Sox traded cash considerations for him.

In an article from Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, now with the White Sox, Workman spoke out about his new team and his feelings post-trade. “Grateful for my time with the Cubs and good people over there. But now I’m with the White Sox and I’m excited to be here, and now I want to beat the Cubs.” Workman expressed gratitude for the chance to compete with the Cubs, and also praised the people in the Cubs organization.

But while expressing his excitement for playing for the White Sox, he said that he wanted to beat the Cubs. Workman’s desire to beat the Cubs comes after just nine games with the Cubs, and a rough stint at that. Across those nine games, Workman had 14 at-bats where he had three hits, two RBI, one walk, six strikeouts, and one stolen base. Workman finished his brief Cubs tenure with a .214 batting average and a .553 OPS. As the Cubs’ third baseman, Workman had two errors and a fielding percentage of just .778.

The breaking point was a misplay at third against the Dodgers, which allowed Shohei Ohtani to reach base. It was initially ruled an error, but later changed to a hit for Ohtani, resulting in three runs being charged to Shota Imanaga.

T1 the error charged to Gage Workman has been changed to a single for Shohei Ohtani. As a result, three runs are changed to earned against Shota Imanaga.

While not the sole reason for him being DFA’d, the blunder played a role in the Cubs ending the experiment with Workman. Workman didn’t make a large impact on the Cubs during his nine-game stint. But, his first comments after his trade stood out.

The comment that stands out the most however is Workman saying, “Now I want to beat the Cubs.” Workman wasn’t a Cub for very long, but he evidently left a lasting impact due to the reaction from Cubs fans in response to his comments.
