There’s a special bond between Geno Smith and Pete Carroll that’s more than just coach and player—it’s a relationship built on mutual respect, perseverance, and shared goals. The symbolism was clear when Carroll walked alongside Smith to the podium during his introductory press conference, signaling the next chapter of Smith’s career under the guidance of his long-time mentor.
When Smith first joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, his future appeared to be as a backup quarterback. Drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Smith had endured six difficult seasons split between the Jets, New York Giants, and Los Angeles Chargers. His starting record was 12-19, and his completion rate was under 60%. Throughout these years, Smith struggled with inconsistency, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns.
