Geno Smith Eager to ‘Run Through a Wall’ for Coach and Mentor Pete Carroll

Posted on April 9, 2025

There’s a special bond between Geno Smith and Pete Carroll that’s more than just coach and player—it’s a relationship built on mutual respect, perseverance, and shared goals. The symbolism was clear when Carroll walked alongside Smith to the podium during his introductory press conference, signaling the next chapter of Smith’s career under the guidance of his long-time mentor.

When Smith first joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, his future appeared to be as a backup quarterback. Drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Smith had endured six difficult seasons split between the Jets, New York Giants, and Los Angeles Chargers. His starting record was 12-19, and his completion rate was under 60%. Throughout these years, Smith struggled with inconsistency, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. However, his resilience never faltered.

Pete Carroll saw something special in Smith early on. Despite the challenges, Smith showed a unique ability to stay ready for every opportunity, never losing sight of the possibility of stepping in when called upon. As Carroll put it, “Geno went through a lot to get here,” recognizing the mental toughness that Smith had developed during his time on the bench. This determination would eventually lead to a remarkable comeback.

In 2022, Smith seized his chance when Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos. Starting for the Seahawks, Smith made an immediate impact, particularly in the season opener against Wilson’s Broncos. He led the Seahawks to a 17-16 victory, throwing for two touchdowns and completing 23 of 28 passes. This performance set the tone for what would become a stellar season, with Smith earning his first Pro Bowl selection and being named NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

Under Carroll’s coaching, Smith threw 50 touchdowns over two seasons, helping the Seahawks win 17 games—five more than he had in his previous six years as a starter. His mindset remained consistent throughout, always focused on competing and winning. “I’m still that same guy who had to fight, scratch and claw for the opportunity,” Smith said, reflecting on his journey from backup to starter.

Now with the Las Vegas Raiders, Smith is eager to continue his career under theleadership of Carroll, who, after a year away from coaching, is once again tasked with revitalizing a franchise. Carroll’s belief in Smith’s work ethic and ability to inspire teammates has been evident since day one. “He’s got it in spades,” Smith said of Carroll’s leadership. With a career year behind him, including a 10-win season in 2024, Smith is primed to lead the Raiders with the same determination that has defined his career.
