GOOD NEWS: Boston Red Sox Confirms Winter Top Trade

Posted on April 11, 2025

A prominent Boston Red Sox reporter suggests that the team’s front office may be preparing for a significant winter trade reminiscent of their blockbuster deal for Chris Sale in 2017.

Despite the Red Sox’s season not going as well as hoped, there were positive signs of progress. Unfortunately, they faced tough competition in the AL East from two of the league’s top teams, the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees. Nevertheless, the team managed to finish with a respectable 81-81 record, even without making major offseason acquisitions.

Additionally, young players like Brayan Bello and Ceddanne Rafaela have demonstrated potential as key members of the Red Sox’s core moving forward. While the team is not anticipated to be significant players in MLB free agency this winter, they may still pursue impactful moves, particularly through the trade market.

In recent weeks, there have been rumors that Boston could consider offering some of their top prospects in trade discussions this offseason. This week, Mass Live Red Sox reporter Chris Cotillo proposed a specific bold trade that the organization might target this winter.

Could the Boston Red Sox target Justin Steele trade this winter?

“John Henry’s recent spending habits and the significant surplus of young position players in the organization create an ideal situation for [Chief Baseball Officer Craig] Breslow to pursue a trade reminiscent of the 2017 deal that brought Chris Sale to Boston in exchange for a package led by Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech. What about rekindling interest in old friend Justin Steele from the Cubs?”

The Boston Red Sox hired Craig Breslow last year after he served as the assistant general manager for the Chicago Cubs. During his time in Chicago, he witnessed Justin Steele’s development, culminating in All-Star honors for the first time in 2023.

This season, Steele posted numbers similar to his breakout year, but he was limited to just five wins after achieving a career-best 16 victories in 2023. He could potentially step in as the Red Sox’s new No. 1 pitcher next season.
