GOOD NEWS: Cubs, Braves Confirms Another Blockbuster Deal

The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves are aiming to contend for their division titles this season. As the trade deadline approaches, teams in the playoff hunt often seek starting pitching, and this July could offer some strong options—one of them being Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez. If the Astros struggle early in the season, both the Cubs and Braves may emerge as potential trade partners for Valdez.

Set to become a free agent in 2026, the 31-year-old left-hander has yet to receive a serious extension offer from Houston. This could mean Chicago or Atlanta wouldn’t have to give up a massive trade package to acquire him, giving them the first opportunity to sign him before he reaches free agency. Currently, Valdez is projected to land a three-year, $70 million deal, averaging $23.3 million annually.

The Astros appear resigned to losing Valdez at some point—the only question is when. If Houston remains in playoff contention, either through the division race or a Wild Card spot, he will likely stay put through the season. However, if they fall out of the race, he could be moved to a contender before the deadline. Right now, acquiring Valdez would likely cost two top-15 prospects, though his value could rise as the deadline nears. Both the Cubs and Braves should be willing to pay the price for a frontline starter who would immediately bolster their rotations.
