Over 63 appearances that year, Stanek posted a 4.38 ERA with the Mariners, and after being traded to the Mets in July, he struggled even more, finishing with a 6.06 ERA in 17 appearances, though he did strike out 23 batters in just 16.1 innings during his time in New York.
Before his tough 2024 season, Stanek had been a key contributor to the Astros bullpen for three years, particularly during their World Series run in 2022. That season, he was nearly unhittable, posting a 1.15 ERA across 59 appearances, with 54.2 innings pitched. Notably, he did not allow a single hit or earned run during the playoffs, including his performance in the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Stanek had an impressive postseason showing, providing critical relief in the Astros’ title-winning effort.
Drafted in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, Stanek made his MLB debut in 2017. He later had a brief stint with the Miami Marlins before joining Houston. Now, at 33 years old and coming off a rough season, some might argue that Stanek’s best years are behind him. However, considering his recent elite performance just two years ago, a one-year contract, potentially a minor league deal, could still be a worthwhile gamble for a team in need of bullpen depth.
The Cubs have been actively searching for relief help this offseason, with particular focus on finding a closer. Although Stanek has never been a full-time closer, with only 11 career saves to his name, he has been an effective setup man, making him an important piece in the bullpen puzzle. His presence could ease the load on Chicago’s closer, offering reliability in high-leverage situations. While Stanek’s addition may not make waves across the league, it certainly has the potential to improve the Cubs’ bullpen, something they’ve prioritized throughout free agency.
