Huge Boost: Cubs In Trade Talk To Land Another $2.6 Million Target From New York

Posted on April 16, 2025

The Chicago Cubs recently made a major trade, acquiring Houston Astros closer Ryan Pressly to take over as their new closer. However, the Cubs may still be looking to bolster their bullpen further.

FanSided’s Michael Brakebill recently suggested that Chicago could follow up the Pressly move by signing New York Mets reliever Ryne Stanek in free agency.

Stanek is expected to sign for $2.6 million this offseason, according to Spotrac. Brakebill noted that while Stanek has been linked to the Cubs, his 2024 performance, including a 4.88 ERA and 4.14 FIP, raises concerns.

Despite his FIP being better, Brakebill expressed skepticism, citing better available options within the Cubs’ budget. Stanek’s production declined after his trade to the Mets, evidenced by his 7.27 ERA in the second half of the season.

“If Jed Hoyer and the Cubs’ front office are interested in Stanek, it’s likely more than just seeking a bargain compared to other relievers.

Given the team’s strong pitching infrastructure, they probably believe they can fix what’s wrong with Stanek.” While Stanek didn’t have a standout 2024 season, he showed glimpses of the pitcher he was with the Astros.

In 2022, the right-hander posted an impressive 1.15 ERA in 54.2 innings with Houston. The Cubs could potentially sign the struggling reliever for under $5 million, and if they believe they can help him return to his previous form, it could be a very smart move.
