HUGE BOOST: The Cubs Confirms Another Blockbuster Deal

Posted on April 19, 2025

Earlier this week, the Chicago Cubs made their second major trade with the Houston Astros, acquiring closer Ryan Pressly after bringing in Kyle Tucker earlier this winter. Pressly is a welcome addition to a Cubs bullpen that had issues in closing games during 2024. Now, Chicago could explore the free-agent market to find another reliable arm or two to complement Pressly. FanSided’s Michael Brakebill recently predicted the Cubs would sign 39-year-old veteran David Robertson in free agency. Robertson is expected to sign for $7 million, according to Spotrac. “David Robertson is my favorite name on this list,” Brakebill noted. “A former Cub who had solid numbers with the team, Robertson posted a 2.23 ERA with 14 saves in 2022. Since then, he has a 3.01 ERA in 137.1 innings over 2023 and 2024. Although Robertson is entering his 40s, he still seems to have plenty left and should easily find a contract with a major league team this winter. With the Cubs having $13 million left before reaching their $220 million offseason cap, Robertson’s contract fits their budget perfectly.”

If the Cubs are in search of a dependable veteran with a proven ability to succeed, Robertson could be the perfect fit. Over the past three seasons, he has posted ERA+ marks of 132, 145, and 173. With plenty left in the tank, Robertson could likely be brought back to Chicago for under $10 million.
