HUGE BOOST: The Cubs Makes Another Significant Addition Bolstering Squad Depth

Posted on April 18, 2025

After missing out on top free agent Alex Bregman, the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year, $6 million deal with 40-year-old infielder Justin Turner, according to sources. The move, first reported by The Athletic, was met with enthusiasm in the Cubs’ clubhouse.

Turner, known for his leadership and consistency, is expected to provide veteran depth. Shortstop Dansby Swanson praised his professionalism and experience, while left fielder Ian Happ highlighted his ability to maintain success late into his career. Though rookie Matt Shaw is expected to start at third base, Turner will primarily back up first baseman Michael Busch, serve as a designated hitter, and be a reliable bat off the bench.

Turner, a career .285 hitter with a 124 OPS+, proved last season that he remains a valuable asset, posting a .297 average and .818 OPS in the second half. While he has played mostly third base in his career, he has seen increased time at first base and DH in recent years.

This signing likely signals the Cubs’ final major move of the offseason, with President Jed Hoyer emphasizing roster depth. The addition of Turner, a two-time All-Star and former NLCS MVP with the Dodgers, brings experience and stability to a team looking to contend.
