Indianapolis Colts expected to trade quarterback in recent scenario, with three possible destinations, ‘the separation is near..

Posted on June 29, 2025

The Indianapolis Colts find themselves in a difficult situation at quarterback, having a young talent who struggles to remain healthy and a seasoned player who appears more ready for the starting role. This season is vital for head coach Shane Steichen and GM Chris Ballard, and their decision could be pivotal.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson ideally should have taken a step back during his debut NFL season. With very limited experience from college, the Indianapolis Colts chose to have him play immediately. The idea was to let him learn in action, which initially seemed promising, but after just four games into his rookie season, he suffered an injury, ending his year prematurely.

Considering a scenario where the Colts trade Anthony Richardson now, it’s worth addressing the obvious topic.

For various reasons, Anthony Richardson hasn’t proved himself as the franchise quarterback for the Colts. Perhaps trading him might be the optimal choice for both parties involved.

To clarify, Richardson still has two, potentially three years remaining on his contract, yet the pressing concern here is the future of the coaching staff and management. They made the decision to draft the young quarterback, and if his performance doesn’t improve by 2025, they might face repercussions.

In our latest prediction for a trade from every NFL team, Richardson stood out as the prime candidate for the Colts.

Indianapolis made an error by starting him in Week 1 as a rookie. He had 13 college game starts, and it was widely recognized by scouts nationwide that whoever selected him was taking on a developmental task. He required time to learn the professional game, including reading the field and improving as a passer, along with enhancing his physical resilience in the major leagues.

Anthony Richardson is an exceptional athlete. Standing six-foot-four, weighing over 240 pounds, and running in the 4.4-second range. He possesses a strong arm, can leap over opponents in open play, and has the speed to outrun everyone if he finds space.

The challenges he consistently faces are maintaining consistency and staying fit. During his time with the Florida Gators, he seemed to pick up minor injuries almost every weekend, and the pattern has continued in the NFL.

At this juncture, the Colts face a decision. They haven’t reached the playoffs since 2020, and the team seems to be gradually declining each year. With Richardson approaching the third year of his rookie contract, the franchise must choose to commit to him performing significantly better this season or attempt to trade him before he plays any more games.

After two seasons, it’s challenging to see Anthony Richardson as the future quarterback for Indianapolis. He showed great promise when he was drafted, teaming up with Shane Steichen, who had recently crafted a dynamic offense around Jalen Hurts’ dual-threat capabilities.

However, if the team performs poorly this year, Steichen might lose his position, and Ballard could accompany him in leaving. Unless there’s a definitive plan for the 2026 NFL draft, and the ownership is ready to give them another chance.

If the Colts manage to obtain a mid-round draft pick for Richardson, cut their losses, and enter the 2025 season with Daniel Jones as quarterback, they could start planning for a new era. The 2026 NFL draft is anticipated to be rich with quarterbacks, including Arch Manning, should he decide to declare.

Indianapolis might consider acquiring extra draft assets and then combining picks if they need to choose a new franchise quarterback. Alternatively, Daniel Jones could emulate Jared Goff and find a new level of performance with a different team. Letting go of Richardson now could give Steichen and his team more time, which could be justified.

Despite ongoing issues at quarterback, the Colts have secured 17 victories over the last two seasons. Steichen has led a less-than-stellar roster to a mediocre record, and it’s reasonable to say that with the right quarterback, he likely has a playoff team at his disposal.

If the Colts decide to explore a trade, here are three possibilities:

Three potential destinations for an Anthony Richardson trade
Any team trading for Anthony Richardson is considering the future. He’s not being acquired to start by 2025, but to sit, recuperate, get fit, and then potentially compete for a starting position in 2026.

With that objective, consider these teams:

Las Vegas Raiders

Pete Carroll has a history of valuing athletic players. He has always preferred physical outliers who defy conventional expectations, and Anthony Richardson fits that description. Carroll is one of the most seasoned coaches in football, capable of mentoring his players and maximizing their potential.

If you’re unable to find your best form under Pete Carroll, your chances elsewhere are slim.

The Las Vegas Raiders have Geno Smith as their franchise quarterback, but they’re likely also contemplating the future at the position. A mid-round pick would allow Richardson to sit and learn from Carroll and his staff in an environment that might be more beneficial for him long-term.

If he develops properly, pairing Richardson with Ashton Jeanty could be exciting.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers went after Aaron Rodgers in the offseason, but that only addresses their quarterback issue for one season. The 41-year-old has indicated that this is likely his final year, leaving Pittsburgh in need of a QB once the season concludes.

Trading for Anthony Richardson could be an option and would create a quarterback competition between him and sixth-round pick Will Howard.

The Steelers have little to lose in pursuing this option, and it wouldn’t prevent them from drafting a quarterback in 2026.

Minnesota Vikings

JJ McCarthy might be the franchise quarterback the Minnesota Vikings are seeking. He is expected to start for several seasons and has earned his chance to lead the franchise.

However, the Vikings are focused on winning now. McCarthy needs to perform well immediately, and there’s significant pressure on him to do so without veteran guidance in the locker room.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell has excelled with his quarterbacks over the years, usually with a veteran presence. He improved Kirk Cousins and helped Sam Darnold achieve a career year in 2024.

McCarthy will be the starter, but if he struggles, there’s no fallback option on the roster. The Vikings have previously welcomed quarterbacks into their ranks, and Richardson could benefit greatly from one of the top quarterback coaches in the league.
