The 2025 NFL draft is only seven weeks away, and the Indianapolis Colts are still evaluating prospects to add to their team. Indy has gaps across the roster, marking the draft crucial for a team looking to make a postseason comeback.
On the defensive side of the game, the secondary requires enhancements. In 2024, the Colts permitted a 69.36% completion rate to rival quarterbacks (30th in NFL) and gave up 229.4 passing yards per game (26th in NFL).
The Colts may bring in a seasoned free agent to enhance the cornerback position, or they can select a proven rookie in the first round. In a recent mock draft by Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema, the Colts selected Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron with the 14th overall selection.
“Barron clocking a 4.39-second 40-yard dash was nearly the final requirement he needed to fulfill as an outside cornerback following an outstanding year of adapting to the position,” stated Sikkema.
“He has now demonstrated that he can be a significant contributor at safety, in the nickel position, and on the perimeter.” As an off-zone defender, he would be ideal for the new defensive coordinator of the Colts, Lou Anarumo.
Barron dedicated five years to being a Longhorn prior to entering the draft. In his last season, he amassed five interceptions, 11 passes defended, and a total of 67 tackles. Barron would represent a valuable choice at 14th overall, showcasing versatility throughout the secondary.
Standing at 5-foot-11, Barron is somewhat undersized for a corner. The Colts may need assistance at the position, and Barron offers significant collegiate experience after competing in both the SEC and Big 12 during his career.
In 2024, no player from the Colts recorded more than three interceptions. Barron will have numerous chances to take charge in a youthful Colts secondary that has faced significant injury problems in recent years.
