Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sends Cubs’ $85 Million Star to Tigers
The Chicago Cubs enter the 2025 MLB season with a strong core and veteran players aiming to make an impact. As they push for a National League Central title, the team may explore trade options to improve their roster while offloading a sizable contract.
A trade proposal from Athlon Sports suggests the Cubs send Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki—along with the remainder of his five-year, $85 million deal—to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for reliever Will Vest. The potential one-for-one swap would address key needs for both teams.
Detroit, fresh off a rough start against the Los Angeles Dodgers, lacks a true right-handed power threat in the lineup. Suzuki, despite a slow start in 2025, has consistently delivered 20-plus home runs and doubles in recent seasons. His addition would provide much-needed balance between left-handed hitters Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter.
On the other hand, Vest would be a valuable bullpen piece for the Cubs, possibly even stepping into a closer role. Coming off a strong 2024 season with a 2.82 ERA over 70 1/3 innings, Vest’s heavy workload might make Detroit hesitant to part ways with him. However, securing a bat like Suzuki could justify the price.
With the Cubs focusing on contention and already strengthening their outfield with Kyle Tucker, Suzuki could become expendable. As trade discussions heat up, he’s a player to watch in the market.
