The Chicago Cubs have designated right-handed pitcher Julian Merryweather for assignment following a series of underwhelming performances. After a strong start to the 2025 season with a 2.08 ERA over his first 14 appearances, Merryweather struggled in his recent outings, posting a 14.29 ERA and a 3.177 WHIP over his last seven games.
This decline led to the roster move, with the Cubs calling up right-handed pitcher Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Iowa to fill the vacant spot. Kriske, who has previous MLB experience with the Yankees, Orioles, and Royals, has recorded a 3.38 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP in 13 games over 18⅔ innings at Triple-A this season .
Merryweather’s tenure with the Cubs began in 2023 after being claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. In his first season with Chicago, he appeared in 69 games, posting a 3.38 ERA with a 32.3% strikeout rate. However, injuries limited his appearances in 2024, and he underwent knee surgery in September of that year, sidelining him for the remainder of the season
