While losing ace to injury is never good news, the latest update offers hope for a quicker-than-expected return. The Cubs placed the left-hander on the 15-day injured list with a hamstring strain, but manager Craig Counsell shared an encouraging outlook following Chicago’s 9–2 win over the Giants.
Counsell described the injury as “very mild,” adding, “All in all, pretty good news.” Though top star will likely miss more than the minimum 15 days, the timeline currently suggests a possible return within four weeks—much better than initial fears. By comparison, Justin Steele missed nearly six weeks last year with a similar strain.
He has posted a strong 2.82 ERA over eight starts this season, had just dealt with cramps before the hamstring issue surfaced against Milwaukee. Given the nature of the injury, he’ll likely make a rehab start before returning to the rotation.
In the meantime, the Cubs must fill a significant void. Counsell said top pitching prospect Cade Horton is under serious consideration to step into the rotation this weekend against the Mets. Horton, dominant at Triple-A, last pitched Sunday and is on a regular rest schedule. Veteran Chris Flexen is also a potential short-term option.
With Imanaga sidelined and Steele already lost for the season, the Cubs will need others to step up. But if this timeline holds, getting their ace back in about a month would be a big win in a season where the team has serious postseason aspirations.
