Just in: Cubs confirms Justin Steele replacement. More details

Posted on April 24, 2025

Currently, the Chicago Cubs are leading the NL Central, with a game-and-a-half advantage over the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds. They’re in the midst of a crucial three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers to determine the series winner. Despite this strong start, the Cubs are now facing a significant challenge. Left-handed pitcher Justin Steele, the ace of their rotation for the past couple of seasons, is out for the year due to elbow surgery.

This loss is a major setback for the Cubs, leaving a sizable gap in their starting rotation. However, Japanese rookie sensation Shota Imanaga, who impressed in 2024, has continued his strong form. Free agent signings Matthew Boyd and Colin Rea have been reliable so far, and Ben Brown has earned a spot in the rotation. Jameson Taillon, though, has yet to justify the hefty contract he received a couple of offseasons ago.

Although the Cubs have enough arms to fill the rotation in Steele’s absence, they still need impactful pitchers who can perform in the postseason, especially beyond Imanaga. It may be time for general manager Jed Hoyer to dip into the Ricketts’ funds and pursue a trade to reinforce the starting staff. This move would reduce the Cubs’ reliance on pitchers who have yet to prove themselves in October. One potential target to consider is Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, the biggest name likely available.
