JUST IN: Cubs, Phillies Could Land New Third Basemen in Three-Team Trade Proposal

Posted on April 11, 2025

The Chicago Cubs are in urgent need of a third baseman to strengthen their infield, and with the possibility of acquiring Alex Bregman now looking unlikely, they may have to pivot to the trade market. The Pittsburgh Pirates, who recently added Adam Frazier, have a surplus of infielders. While they usually avoid trading with division rivals, they might consider it if a third team is involved. That’s where the Philadelphia Phillies come in, who have been actively seeking starting pitching this offseason.

A potential three-team trade could look like this:

  • Chicago Cubs acquire: 3B Alec Bohm, SP Bailey Falter
  • Philadelphia Phillies acquire: 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes, SP Jameson Taillon
  • Pittsburgh Pirates acquire: OF Brandon Marsh, RP Keegan Thompson

Injuries Continue to Plague the Cubs - The Forkball

For the Cubs, this trade would significantly improve their third base position with Alec Bohm, who posted a solid .280 batting average, 15 home runs, and 97 RBIs in 2024. Bailey Falter would provide depth for their rotation or bullpen. The Phillies would bring in Ke’Bryan Hayes as a defensive asset after losing Bohm, despite Hayes’ offensive struggles in 2024. Jameson Taillon would bolster the Phillies’ pitching staff. The Pirates would gain Brandon Marsh, a potential starting outfielder alongside Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz, and Keegan Thompson to help revamp their bullpen, which struggled in 2024.

This trade would undoubtedly shake up the baseball world, but it’s a bold move that could very well happen with spring training just around the corner.
